Summary

Ocean's Eleven meets The False Prince in this thrilling heist story for young readers, in which five kids with unusual talents are brought together to commit an impossible crime。 Failure is unacceptable 。。。 but success could be deadly。

From the bestselling author of the Blackthorn Key series, this magic-infused fantasy brings together a ragtag group of kids to pull off a crime so difficult, countless adults have already tried and failed。 Lured by the promise of more money than they've ever dreamed of, five young criminals are hired to steal a heavily guarded treasure from the most powerful sorcerer in the city。 There's Callan the con artist, Meriel the expert at acrobatics (and knives!), Gareth the researcher, Lachlan, who can obtain anything, and Foxtail, whose mysterious eyeless mask doesn't hinder her ability to climb walls like a spider。 Though their shadowy backgrounds mean that they've never trusted anyone but themselves, the five must learn to rely on each other in order to get the job done。

But as Callan has been warned most of his life, it's best to stay away from magic。 It can turn on you at any moment and make you think you're the one running the con game, when in reality you're the one being fooled。 Faced with these unsurmountable odds, can the friends pull off this legendary heist, or has their luck finally run out?

This book was longer than I expected。 Although I really enjoyed it, it was, at times, tragic and scary。 I started this audiobook with my nine year old grandson, but not sure if he was able to finish it。 But I personally liked the story and gave it four starts from me。

Callan has been raised and trained to be a con artist by a man he only knows as the Old Man。 His most recent con went off well, but didn't bring in the sum he was hoping for to pay a Weaver to magically heal his back。 So when an offer to pull a job for a man named Mr。 Solomon that sounds too good to be true comes along, Callan smells a trap but can't resist at least checking it out。 He travels to the location and learns his potential employer is a Weaver of no small power, and wants him along wi Callan has been raised and trained to be a con artist by a man he only knows as the Old Man。 His most recent con went off well, but didn't bring in the sum he was hoping for to pay a Weaver to magically heal his back。 So when an offer to pull a job for a man named Mr。 Solomon that sounds too good to be true comes along, Callan smells a trap but can't resist at least checking it out。 He travels to the location and learns his potential employer is a Weaver of no small power, and wants him along with 5 other kids/teens of various talents to pull off a heist from the most powerful man in the land, Grand Weaver himself。 He wants them to steal a gemstone called the Eye, and is willing to pay them an amount such that all of them could retire for life after the job。 The catch? Well, the one he tells them about is he needs the job done by the end of the week。 What he isn't telling them? Well, that's for them to figure out。 One of the teens declines the job, but joining Callan for this impossible heist is Meriel a daring thief and charmer, Foxtail, a nimble acrobat, Gareth, a researcher with sleight of hand skills, and Lachlan, the local boy who can find anyone and anything and charm the socks off of anyone。 Sands has developed a steampunk fantasy world with airships, mechanical objects, and magic。 He spends enough time on each of the characters that they spring to life off the page and you start to really care for them。 But until the heist actually gets running the book felt a little slow for me。 Up until that point is important world and character building, which was good and enjoyable, but after the heist starts it is pretty life or death turn-the-pages-as-fast-as-possible。 I really like how the gang works together and the little family they build over the process, which is something all of them need。 They are all orphans on their own and a little jaded from the rough lives they've had thus far (well, except for Lachlan who seems irrepressibly upbeat)。 I'm hoping future books will give us more backstory on some of the other kids/teens in the group as we just get background on 2 of them in this story。 The ages of the gang members and content make this a nice between middle grade and YA book。 Hand this to kids who like heist stories, steampunk, and Victorian-ish fantasy adventures。Notes on content: No language issues。 No sexual content。 One death by burning and another by magical vaporization somewhat described, another death of a child is told of but not described, some other deaths in the past or in outside communities briefly mentioned。 There are injuries sustained, most gruesome, the loss of an eye and serious burns。 Conning a gambler is part of the plot。 The thieves steal because they have no other means of income or food as orphans。 。。。more

。。。more

My thoughts:This book was SO GOOD。 There was never a dull moment and It was so interesting。 It’s also not as fantasy like as you might think。 It’s still has magic but not like dragons and what not。 This was cool magic stuff。 The characters are so cool and you hear a lot about the main characters background。 This is probably the best book I’ve read this year, and I DEFINITELY recommend it。 The book: 5 thieves work together to steal the most powerful object on earth: THE EYE。 Guarded by the High W My thoughts:This book was SO GOOD。 There was never a dull moment and It was so interesting。 It’s also not as fantasy like as you might think。 It’s still has magic but not like dragons and what not。 This was cool magic stuff。 The characters are so cool and you hear a lot about the main characters background。 This is probably the best book I’ve read this year, and I DEFINITELY recommend it。 The book: 5 thieves work together to steal the most powerful object on earth: THE EYE。 Guarded by the High Weaver, the most powerful man on earth, they must find a way to get in 3 days without being killed。 If they bring it back to Mr。 Solomon, the man they’re working for, the four of them will split 2 million crowns。 7 words: Creative Smart Fun Magic Thievery Tricks100% worth-reading 。。。more

I received a free copy of Children of the Fox by Kevin Sands from Goodreads for my honest review。As an adult reader, I do not always enjoy books geared towards middle school。 I usually find them repetitive and boring。 This book was definitely refreshing。 I loved the characters, they were so unique and each one added something to the story。 The story mixes magic with unreliable characters, and some mystery。

Magic, deception, fables, a heist。 Man, this book is fun。 It’s written as juvenile lit but it could just as easily be marketed to any age。 Five kids must outwit adults and magic spirits。 The only warning I will give is that the ending leads to book 2, which I’d want to read anyway, but I prefer when each adventure wraps up at the end of each book, rather than being forced to keep reading to determine an outcome。 And I know that LOTR is this way, but readers enter that trilogy knowing that it is Magic, deception, fables, a heist。 Man, this book is fun。 It’s written as juvenile lit but it could just as easily be marketed to any age。 Five kids must outwit adults and magic spirits。 The only warning I will give is that the ending leads to book 2, which I’d want to read anyway, but I prefer when each adventure wraps up at the end of each book, rather than being forced to keep reading to determine an outcome。 And I know that LOTR is this way, but readers enter that trilogy knowing that it is a 3-book required read。 This one doesn’t need the cliffhanger to encourage readers to continue。 The characters and the adventure were enough on their own。 。。。more

Another intelligent, suspenseful series by Kevin Sands。 Recommended for both children and adult fans of the genre。 Can’t wait for the second instalment。

A middle grade novel that read more like YA, both in terms of length and heavy content。 Really enjoyed the unique characters and I do love a good heist story。 It was very creatively told! Ended on a great setup for the next book。

Wild! Loved the characters and the plot。 Can’t wait for the sequel。 Adventure, Magic, Mischief - who could ask for more?

The protagonist feels older than 14, but this is a pretty interesting heist novel。

One of the best fantasy MG books I've read this year - actually in the past few years (still not better than Morrigan Crowe, my all-time favorite, but definitely up there)。 I loved the characterization, the plot, and the magical elements in a well-developed world。 Magical heist stories are so fun, and this one stands out with its mystery and plot twists and intriguing cast of characters that felt fully developed thanks to their shared back stories。 I also absolutely loved the mythologies woven t One of the best fantasy MG books I've read this year - actually in the past few years (still not better than Morrigan Crowe, my all-time favorite, but definitely up there)。 I loved the characterization, the plot, and the magical elements in a well-developed world。 Magical heist stories are so fun, and this one stands out with its mystery and plot twists and intriguing cast of characters that felt fully developed thanks to their shared back stories。 I also absolutely loved the mythologies woven throughout the tale。 We read a lot of MG books together as a family and many of them feel very much like they are geared towards the younger set and I tolerate them, as the kids enjoy them。 This one felt like I could enjoy the story and character development as an adult, which I find to be rare in MG books。 Can't wait for the next installment (there is one coming? I hope?) and will for sure check out the author's other books。 A new favorite for the family! 。。。more

I started this book a little while ago and I didn’t like it very much。 I originally bought it because it was signed。 I am so glad I picked it up。 It is one of my new favourites。 The characters were really fun, the world was cool。 It was like a middle grade six of crows。 I really want the next one, but it doesn’t come out until October。 So far away。 I really think you should read this book if you like fun heists and cool magic。
